LLCSD Independent Study Program Information 2025-2026
Little Lake City School District offers an Independent Study Program for students in grades 3–8 as an alternative instructional option for families who prefer a flexible learning environment while maintaining academic progress aligned to California State Standards.
Enrollment in Independent Study is case by case and based on student needs, program suitability, and district approval.
Instructional Model: Asynchronous & Synchronous Learning

Asynchronous Instruction (Independent Work)
Students complete most assignments independently through the Acellus online learning program. Coursework includes instructional videos, digital lessons, reading, writing, and assigned practice aligned to grade-level standards. -
Synchronous Instruction (Live Interaction)
Students participate in scheduled short live virtual sessions with a credentialed teacher for academic support, progress monitoring, and guidance.
Attendance & Engagement Requirements

Submit daily academic work through Acellus

Participate in scheduled live check-ins with the Independent Study teacher

Maintain weekly academic progress as defined in the Independent Study Agreement

Communicate with the teacher regularly

Complete all assigned work on time

Meet minimum instructional time requirements
Failure to meet participation and progress requirements may result in a Student Re-engagement Meeting or a return to in-person instruction, as required by California Education Code.
State Testing Requirement
All Independent Study students must participate in state testing at the end of the year:

SBAC, ELPAC, and PE testing is required on campus

Parent/Guardian Role
Parents/guardians play a critical role in supervising independent learning. They must:

Monitor daily work completion

Support organization and time management
-
Ensure weekly progress
-
Maintain communication with the teacher

Support attendance at testing and required meetings

Sign the Independent Study Written Agreement

Parents/guardians may request a conference to:

Discuss student needs or available supports
Conferences may be held by phone, video conference, or in person.
